Summary The Facilities Management Service (FMS) of the Phoenix VA VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Maintenance Mechanic. The incumbent will be assigned to the Plumbing/Mechanical section within the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service at the Phoenix VA Medical Center. The incumbent will perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam, heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment. They install, modify, and repair systems. Sets up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation, and determining and installing such things as risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in operation of the systems. Installs, maintains, repairs and troubleshoots hospital control and medical support machinery such as 2500W to 2.5MW portable and emergency gas/diesel generators, medical air compressors, medication carts and vacuum pumps. Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventative maintenance to all laundry equipment and related systems in the laundry facility. Responsible for a full range of preventative maintenance, installation, troubleshoot and repairs to all laundry equipment and related systems in the laundry facility. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Work is completed inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, noisy and greasy. The incumbent is sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where undesirable chemical fumes or odors are present. There is occasional exposure to uncomfortable heat, wind and wet conditions. The maintenance mechanic is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections. The incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing when hazardous conditions exist. The incumbent will on occasionally have to operate a government vehicle to accomplish work required at VA outpatient clinics located approximately. 50-75 miles from the main medical center. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
