    The Amentum Antarctica Assistant Fire Chief supports the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) United States Antarctic Program (USAP) and will report to the Fire Chief. The Assistant Fire Chief performs the duties outlined below and any other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief IAW US Air Force, NFPA, PWS criteria and any other applicable industry standards/criteria. The additional duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

    **Position Responsibilities:**

    + Responds to large-scale emergencies and makes decisions related to emergency management and fireground operations to include evaluating and directing emergency operations to protect life and property IAW US Air Force, NFPA and PWS criteria.

    + Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates fire and EMS operations.

    + Prepares records and reports of fire department responses to fires or other emergencies, personnel actions, and other information as may be required.

    + Assists in the preparation and presentation of an annual budget for the Antarctica Fire Department (AFD); oversees the implementation of the department’s budget; plans for and reviews specifications for new or other replacement equipment.

    + Provides oversight and reviews department programs.

    + Represents the AFD in a variety of meetings with the prime contract holder, NSF, and other applicable sub-contract holders, organizations and agencies in the absence of the Fire Chief.

    + Supervises the firefighter health and safety programs including development and implementation. Manages the comprehensive occupational medical evaluation program and other programs that are directed to improve the health and safety of department personnel.

    + Interview, hires and evaluates new candidates.

    + Supervises the Fire Prevention Program including developing facility inspection schedule for all sites and ensuring inspections are conducted IAW, NFPA, PWS and other applicable criteria.

    + Handles grievances, maintains discipline and ensures adherence to the rules and regulations of the standard operating guidelines of the program.

    + Assists in documentation and reporting as required and directed by program leadership.

    + Ensures the maintaining of a safe workplace with safety as the highest priority.

    + Complies with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals; provides information and materials to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate documentation.

    + Supervises Fire Department Operations personnel during both emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring operational readiness of personnel and equipment.

    + Leads personnel during activities, including but not limited to training, work details, crew-level administration, fire prevention, public education and communications.

    + Participates in AFD activities, including but not limited to fire suppression, EMS, rescue, public assistance, fire investigation, fire prevention, pre-fire planning, training, public education, clinical training and routine maintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities.

    + Supports emergency management functions as needed.

    + Performs any other duties as assigned or approved by the Fire Chief.

    **Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:**

    + A minimum of ten years of experience in fire/emergency services operations in progressively increasing leadership roles with at least four years in a position of Fire Captain or above.

    + High school diploma or equivalent

    + Fire Officer IV

    + Fire Instructor II

    + Fire Inspector II

    + Airport Firefighter

    + HAZMAT Materials Incident Commander

    + National Incident Management System (NIMS): ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800.

    + CPR certification

    + Certifications must be IFSAC or NPQS accredited

    **Expected Skills and Competencies:**

    + Ability to read, write, understand and fluently speak English.

    + Knowledge of all principles and processes involved in Fire and Emergency Services, with the ability to maintain all required certifications and licensures.

    + Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently.

The duties of this position are so rigorous that employment is limited to physically vigorous individuals who must meet established maximum age and physical qualification requirements. Physical Demands: Arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as, but not limited to, extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, jumping and twisting, prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Work Environment: Forest, range, and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and may fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Employee must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor bivouac and eating situations under an unpredictable set of circumstances. Firefighters may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (e.g., boots, hard hat, gloves, flame resistant clothing). The incumbent will be in pay status at least 13 pay periods (26 weeks) or more depending on funding & workload not-to-exceed 25 pay periods (50 weeks) per calendar year. This position has been designated as an Incidental Operator under the Indian Affairs Motor Vehicle Safety Program and requires the incumbent to operate a motor vehicle in order to properly carry out his/her assigned duties but whose principal duties are not operating a motor vehicle and his/her position is not classified as a motor vehicle operator.
